Head and Shoulders vs Double Top: What's the Difference?
Both can mark the end of an uptrend, and both complete when a neckline breaks. The difference is in the peaks.
The quick difference
- Head and shoulders has three peaks, and the middle one is clearly highest.
- Double top has two peaks at about the same level.
- Neckline: in a head and shoulders it joins two troughs and can slope. In a double top it runs through the single trough between the peaks.
Head and shoulders
Price makes a high, a higher high, and then a lower high. That last failure shows buyers could not reach the previous peak, even before the neckline breaks.
Double top
Price reaches a high, pulls back, and fails at about the same level again. The market has rejected the same zone twice. The read completes when price closes below the trough between the peaks.
When it's hard to tell
If the middle peak of three is only slightly higher, or if there are two peaks plus a small bump, the name matters less than the level. Both patterns ask the same question: does the neckline hold or break?
What cancels each one
- Head and shoulders: price reclaims the neckline and holds above it after the break.
- Double top: price closes clearly above both peaks.
