Double Top Pattern Explained

Two similar highs — breakdown below the middle trough confirms.

What it looks like

Two peaks at approximately the same price level, indicating potential bearish reversal.

Strongest when both peaks reject the same zone cleanly.

How to identify it

  1. Find two peaks near the same resistance with a valley between.
  2. Confirm the second peak fails to break the first by much.
  3. Watch for breakdown below the middle trough (neckline).

When the read is wrong

Invalid if price closes decisively above both peaks.

Common mistakes

  • Treating any two highs as a double top. Without a break of the middle trough the range can simply continue.
  • Expecting the peaks to match exactly. Similar highs in the same zone are enough.
  • Reading it on a very low timeframe, where two similar highs appear all the time.

Questions and answers

What confirms a double top?

A close below the trough between the two peaks, often called the neckline. Before that it is only a possible double top.

What is the difference between a double top and a triple top?

A triple top has one more failed attempt at the same resistance. The break of the lows between the peaks is the confirmation in both.
