Engulfing Reversal Pattern Explained
One large candle body fully covers the body of the candle before it.
What it looks like
A large candle body fully engulfs the prior bar — bullish at support or bearish at resistance depending on direction.
Works best with trend and volume context.

How to identify it
- Find the small candle that ends the current swing.
- Check that the next candle's body fully covers that candle's body, in the opposite color.
- It carries more weight at clear support or resistance.
When the read is wrong
Invalid if price closes beyond the far end of the engulfing candle.
Common mistakes
- Using it in the middle of a range, where engulfing candles appear all the time.
- Reacting before the candle closes. It can look engulfing mid-bar and end up very different.
Questions and answers
Is an engulfing candle bullish or bearish?
It depends on direction. A green candle covering a red one at support leans bullish. A red candle covering a green one at resistance leans bearish.
Do the wicks need to be engulfed too?
The usual definition looks at the candle bodies. Covering the wicks as well makes the candle stand out more.
