How it works

  • Range = swing high − swing low.
  • Uptrend (price rose from the low to the high): a retracement level r is at high − range × r, and an extension e is at low + range × e, above the high.
  • Downtrend (price fell from the high to the low): the mirror image, so retracements are at low + range × r and extensions at high − range × e, below the low. Extensions that would fall at or below zero are not shown.

Example: With a low of 100 and a high of 200 in an uptrend, the 61.8% retracement is at 138.2 and the 161.8% extension is at 261.8.

Questions

Do Fibonacci levels predict where price will turn?

No. They are reference levels that many traders watch, so price sometimes reacts near them, and often it does not. Treat them as places to watch, not predictions.

Why is 50% included when it is not a Fibonacci ratio?

Traders use it next to the Fibonacci ratios because halfway pullbacks are common, so most charting tools show it too.

My charting tool shows extensions differently. Why?

Tools measure extensions in different ways. This calculator measures them from the start of the swing, so 161.8% in an uptrend means the low plus 1.618 times the swing. The formulas are shown on this page.
