How it works
- A pip is 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen (like USD/JPY).
- Pip value = lots × 100,000 × pip size. That amount is in the pair's second currency.
- If the second currency is not the US dollar, it is converted into dollars with an exchange rate.
Example: EUR/USD, 1 lot: 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 a pip. USD/JPY at 150, 1 lot: 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000, which is about $6.67 a pip.
Questions
Where does the exchange rate come from?
When you pick a pair, ChartNox loads the latest price from Yahoo Finance. While the market is open it is usually a few minutes old; when the forex market is closed, for example at weekends, it is the last price before the close. You can type your own rate instead.
Why is EUR/USD always $10 a pip on one lot?
Because its second currency is the US dollar, so the pip value needs no conversion. The same is true for GBP/USD, AUD/USD and NZD/USD.
Does it work for gold, oil or indices?
No, only the currency pairs in the list. Brokers set contract sizes for gold, oil and indices in different ways, so check your broker's contract details for those.
